Freedom Reigns for Brian Banks

"Freedom reigns in this place, showers of Mercy and Grace. Falling on every face, there is freedom"
Jason Upton

Yesterday, Brain Banks was exonerated (Exonerated to clear, as of an accusation; free from guilt or blame). You see, as everyone is celebrating for Brian, I am blessed to celebrate with Brian. Yesterday will be a day I will NEVER forget. My younger brother became a free man! The night before I prayed and prayed hard. I didn't feel any angst though. I didn't know what god had in store but I knew that whatever He had planned would be great, no matter if it happened on Thursday or 2 years in the future.

I knew Brian's court proceedings were to begin at 8:30am Thursday. My phone rang at 9:20am ( I had to work). When I saw "MOM" go across the screen my heart beat out of control. This is it I told myself.  "He's free", she said. Admittedly, I was in disbelief. After spending 5 years of visiting one my younger brothers in 1 juvenile correction facility and 2 maximum security prisons and after witnessing Brian plug in to charge a monitoring device on his ankle after his release, I could not believe the news I was hearing.  I couldn't do anything but cry. I was so happy, not for me, not for him, but for us.  What I am almost certain the alleged victim did not know was, not only did she take away a piece of Brian's freedom, but she took away a piece of our family's freedom. We were imprisoned with him. We suffered too. We do not play with the word rape. My mother raised upstanding individuals. No, we are not perfect but we are not criminals. Brian is and was not a rapist. Yesterday the world finally learned the truth that we have known for 10 years now. He was INNOCENT!

As I got up from my desk to finish the call with my mother I experienced the greatest joy I have ever felt. The burdens I had carried for my brother were finally lifted from my shoulders. Words can not begin to express the overwhelming joy and happiness I feel. Moments after the proceeding I got a chance to speak to Brian. That was the happiest I have ever heard him. I knew he was smiling ear to ear.  He thanked me and I thanked him. I thanked him for never giving up, for always standing up for his innocence and for being an example to entire nation.

This is an incredible breakthrough for our family but this is just the beginning for Brian.  He's spent 10+ years fighting for his freedom. Even after his release there were so many places he still could not go. There were things he still could not do. He has so much to catch up on, so many things to see and so many places to explore.

Personally I would like to express my gratitude to those who have stood by Brian and our family throughout this trying time. I'd like to thank all those who took time to visit, write or accept phone calls while Brian was incarcerated. Thank you to those who have prayed for him and for those surrounding him. Thank you Brian for showing the world the true meaning of perseverance.  You are definitely my hero!
